Surfshark VPN provides a custom DNS service called Smart DNS and an ad-blocker branded as CleanWeb. Anyone who uses a Surfshark static server shares an IP address with everyone else on the same server. Surfshark VPN does not offer dedicated IP addresses, but it does allow customers to access static servers for free. NordVPN and others supply private, static IP addresses, useful when you find your VPN connection blocked. Many VPN companies offer extra-cost add-ons. You don't need a VPN to use Tor, but this kind of push-button access is convenient. One rare feature Surfshark currently does not offer is access to Tor via VPN, which is available through NordVPN and ProtonVPN. Surfshark VPN has revamped this feature and now lets you create multi-hop connections between any two server locations. The feature is not available on iOS, Linux, or macOS, however.Īnother feature often absent from VPN services is multi-hop connectivity, which creates a VPN connection to a server and then bounces your traffic to a second VPN server for increased security. Surfshark's solution is tidy and far easier to use than competitors. It's handy because some sites block access via VPN, so you need to disable yours to reach them. Bypasser, for instance, is a split tunneling tool that lets you decide which apps and websites use the VPN. Surfshark's real strengths are the rarely seen features it provides. (Editors' Note: IPVanish is owned by Ziff Davis, PCMag's parent company.) What Do You Get for Your Money With Surfshark VPN? Atlas VPN, Avira Phantom VPN, IPVanish VPN, Private Internet Access VPN, and Editors' Choice winner TunnelBear VPN are the only other VPNs we've tested that don't limit simultaneous connections. Most companies limit you to five simultaneous connections. Unlike the vast majority of VPNs, Surfshark VPN lets you use an unlimited number of devices with one account. While the monthly plan is expensive, Surfshark VPN does offer excellent value for money. Also, keep in mind that other services such as IVPN-an affordable Editors' Choice winner noted for its focus on transparency and privacy-and Mullvad VPN go so far as to accept cash payments so you can use them without revealing personal information. Proton VPN is one of the only free VPNs that doesn't impose a data limit on user traffic. If Surfshark VPN is too rich for your blood, there are numerous cheap VPNs and even a few worthy free VPNs to consider. Long-term plans absolutely save you money, but we recommend starting with the shortest possible subscription to make sure the VPN works for you, and only then moving to a longer subscription plan if you like the service. While that's a bit confusing, that annual renewal price is still less than the $66.28 average for VPNs we've reviewed. A two-year plan costs $59.76 as well but renews at that same price every year after the first two. An annual plan starts at $47.88 and renews the following year for $59.76. Like many VPNs, Surfshark VPN incentivizes long-term commitments with steep discounts. This puts Surfshark among the most expensive VPNs we've reviewed, far beyond the $9.99 per month for Mozilla's VPN or the 5 euros ($5.38 at time of writing) per month charged by Mullvad VPN, our most affordable Editors' Choice VPN. Surfshark VPN's subscription costs $12.95 per month, compared with an average of $9.80 per month among services we've tested. Anyone considering Surfshark VPN but daunted by the price should also look at Proton VPN and Mullvad VPN, which are both less expensive. The company is good at justifying that cost, however, with unlimited device connections, an improving and expanding product, and excellent apps. In a crowded field, Surfshark VPN continues to impress, making it an Editors' Choice winner. VPNs can improve your online privacy by routing all your web traffic through an encrypted connection to a remote server, but that protection comes at a price in the case of Surfshark VPN, one of the most expensive services we've tested.
